Consciousness & New Physics
- "Prometheus Rising" (Amazon.com) by Robert Anton Wilson. Robert has the most incredible wit, along with the most free-thinking mind I've encountered. His prescription for breaking free of our "reality tunnels" and his depiction of Tim Leary's 8-circuit model of consciousness - a main influence in Transforming the Mind - makes this my favourite.
- "Awakening to Zero Point: The Collective Initiation" (Amazon.com) by Gregg Braden. This book intellectually synthesizes current geological events with past cultural predictions, quantum physics with non-hyped "new consciousness," while never pretending to predict. Gregg Braden weaves a non-denominational tapestry of possible outcomes for our collective consciousness, while never preaching. It is comforting that even just one human amongst us billions thinks this way.
- "Walking Between the Worlds: The Science of Compassion" by Gregg Braden. Two thousand year old texts remind us that compassion is an accessible state of awareness determining the quality of our well being. Are we witnessing the birth of a new species of human genetically shifting to accommodate this time of change? Recent data demonstrates that compassionate emotion may be our forgotten switch to turn "ON" powerful codes of genetic options. The latest research confirms the role of emotion in our immune response and life giving relationships. Gregg Braden offers the opportunity to redefine hate, fear, separation and the role that they play in your life!
- "Lost in the Land of Oz" by Madonna Kolbenschlag. Ventures into the uncharted territory between the individual and the 'system,' where myth - the collective archetype - functions as an inexorable force and energy. In exposing the deep structure of our social arrangements and agreements, she provides a guide for the modern 'spiritual orphan,' who has witnessed the loss of safety and trust, the disintegration of value and the threat of spiritual catastrophe.
- "The Alphabet Versus the Goddess : The Conflict Between Word and Image" by Leonard Shlain. Making remarkable connections across a wide range of subjects including brain anatomy and function, anthropology, history, and religion, Shlain argues that, with the advent of literacy, the very act of reading an alphabet reinforced the brain's left hemisphere - linear, abstract, predominantly masculine at the expense of the right holistic, concrete, visual, feminine. This shift upset the balance between men and women, and initiated the decline of women's social and political status, and a long reign of patriarchy and misogyny. Shlain goes on to describe a colossal shift now under way: the return of the image and a shift from the dominance of the left hemisphere to reassertion of the right. All of this ties in with the understanding of L/R brain functions acquired through research in Bilateral biofeedback.
- "Quantum Psychology - How brain software programs you and your world" by Robert Anton Wilson. With his characteristic wit Robert shows how our 'reality tunnel' is programmed by cultural and linguistic set-patterns of thinking.
- "Shaving the Inside of Your Skull: Crazy Wisdom for Discovering Who You Really Are" by Mel Ash. Zen monks traditionally shave their heads as a symbol of their renunciation of the world. But author Mel Ash points out that it's not enough to shave the outside. Why not shave the inside as well? This is one wild and crazy book. Ash gives us "razors" to use that are really creative homework assignments to help us shave all the beliefs, isms, and self-limitations that hold us back.
Transpersonal
- "I Am That: Conversations with Nisargadatta Maharaj". Who are you, really? According to Nisargadatta Maharaj, an enlightened master who has achieved an almost mythical underground popularity over the last decade, you are not your body, nor your emotions, nor your thoughts -- not even the thought of "I". The closest you could come to a description is to say that you are the awareness upon which (or within which) everything exists and happens, the screen upon which the movie is shown but which is not apparent during the movie. Something to read and re-read, ponder and re-ponder, over many years.
- "You Cannot Die: The Incredible Findings of a Century of Research on Death" (Amazon.com) by Ian Currie. This bestselling classic about death and dying advances the startling but liberating proposition that human beings do survive physical death. Research on death in this century has been extensive and author and psychic researcher Ian Currie painstakingly amassed the results of this wide-ranging material using case histories of parapsychological phenomena from out-of-the-body experiences, deathbed visions, mediumship, apparitions, possessions and hauntings to provide the basis for this extraordinary claim. In a riveting presentation that often reads like a detective story, he presents evidence that makes it clear that, indeed, you cannot die.
- "Recovering the Soul: A Scientific and Spiritual Approach" by Larry Dossey. A physician and leading reformer of medicine delves into the compelling medical, scientific, and spiritual evidence for a universal consciousness and presents convincing evidence for a nonlocalized, holistic view of the mind and reality that accounts for even transcendental experiences.
- "Your Sixth Sense: Activating Your Psychic Potential" by Belleruth Naparstek. The sixth sense is standard operating equipment, not a gift bestowed only upon the chosen few, claims Belleruth Naparstek. In fact, that voice of gut knowledge will speak to us whenever we're ready to listen. Problem is, the static going on in our heads easily drowns it out. Framed within an intelligent and plausible discussion of psychic powers, Naparstek teaches specific exercises and mindsets that will boost your inner radar.
- "The Holographic Universe" (Amazon.com) by Michael Talbot. A delight for anyone interested in the paranormal abilities of the mind, the latest frontiers of physics, and the unsolved riddles of brain and body, The Holographic Universe explores the ways in which our concepts of time, personality, even consciousness, are altered by defining them as holographic. Reading this, you will not look at the world in quite the same way again.
- "Stalking the Wild Pendulum - On the Mechanics of Consciousness" by Itzhak Benthov. This book offers a revolutionary perspective on human consciousness and its limitless possibilities. Widely known and loved for his clarity, humor, and imagination, Bentov throws new light on the familiar world of phenomena, giving us a startling new view of ourselves in an expanded, conscious, holistic universe.
- "Infinite Potential : The Life and Times of David Bohm" by F. David Peat. Recounts the life of the physicist/philosopher David Bohm, explaining his landmark scientific discoveries and his work that helped to de-mystify metaphysics.
- "The Rebirth of Nature -The Greening of Science & God" by Rupert Sheldrake. A revolutionary new understanding of the 'information fields' that provide the glue for Mother Nature's evolution and planetary consciousness, including that of Mankind.
- "Inner Knowing: Consciousness, Creativity, Insight, and Intuition" by Helen Palmer. This new release in the New Consciousness Reader series is a stunning collection of essays from leading authorities on perception, creativity, and intuition. Palmer hopes to offer a classic resource for anyone who wants to commit to developing his or her mental and spiritual powers.
Channelled Information
- "The Spectrum of Consciousness" by Ken Wilber. Through a brilliant marrying of eastern and western psychology, this book challenges the reader to conceive a reality where most understandings of conciousness are subsets of a larger. Uses many separate analogies to define consciousness and how it may be developed.
- "LSD Psychotherapy" by Janislav Grof. Dr. Grof breaks down unconscious areas which are reached by work with LSD into three areas: As defenses dissolve, material from early childhood memories are first accessed; then birth traumas resulting in the death/rebirth stage are felt; finally transpersonal experiences are accessed, "agonies and ecstasies of cosmic proportions". While pertaining to LSD therapy, much of the material is relevant to other deep regressive psychotherapies, and is enlightening reading.
- "The Alchemist " by Paul Coelho. The Alchemist is a parable of following one's dream. The story is of a gifted shepherd, Santiago, who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. At each step of the way Santiago finds himself confronted with the crossroads we all face in life's decisions. It is one of those books which brings you close to tears sometimes, not because of anything sad but because parts of it are so beautiful and so clear that one experiences a moment of powerful personal illumination.
- "The Book (On the Taboo against Knowing Who You Are)" by Alan W. Watts. One of the most significant spiritual books ever written. Watts has a delightful way of presenting common but extremely fundamental ideas you've always taken for granted in a new and completely different way. He twists your brain and your assumptions about yourself and life around in a way that cannot help but change the way you look at yourself and your place in the universe.
- "Discover Your Subpersonalities; Our Inner World and the People in It" by John Rowan. Describes how subpersonalities are built up in the normal human personality, the roles that they play and the internal conflicts they cause; and further, how to integrate them and thus discover the real, higher self.
- "The Essential Ken Wilber: An Introductory Reader". As one of the founding voices in the transpersonal psychology movement, Wilber was one of the first authors to write about how the great psychological systems of the West could be integrated with the contemplative traditions of the East. This has created a profound inter-disciplinary paradigm that all of us continue to benefit from. This is Ken Wilber in the raw, only edited for easier reference and convenience.
- "Waking Up - Overcoming the Obstacles to Human Potential" (Amazon.com) by Charles T. Tart. A very helpful book which advances Gurdjieffian thought with the concept of cultural trance.
- "The Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution" by P. D. Ouspensky. Explains some of the fundamental tenets of Gurdjieff, including the self-imposed barriers to personal development.
- "Beyond the Brain - Birth, Death & Transcendence in Psychotherapy" by Stanislav Grof. From his early research with LSD in mental treatment, Grof discovered that transpersonal states lie dormant within each of us, and he devoted his future work to making that potential accessible to others, safely and without the use of drugs.
Enlightenment
- "Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul" by Jane Roberts & Robert F. Butts. If you are a searcher, and have felt that the religions of the world have the right 'heart' but way too much paraphernalia attached, check this book out. It is life-affirming, and will release you from the shackles of your own fear about any number of subjects.
- "Omni Reveals The Four Principles of Creation" by John L. Payne. An inspiring and compelling collection of questions and answers posed to Omni, a nonphysical group entity channeled through John Payne over the past seven years. Omni is primarily concerned with communicating the four principles of creation which form the core of its teaching, all centering around the idea that the creative aspect of the universe is a natural part of our being.
Psychology
- "The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment" (Amazon.com) by Ekhart Tolle. Beautifully and gently, Tolle creates a space where we can go beyond an intellectual understanding and actually "get it" at a more fundamental, core level. In a way which is most delightful, this book moves the reader beyond words and into an experiential state.
- "Toward a Psychology of Awakening: Buddhism, Psychotherapy and The Path of Personal and Spiritual Transformation" by John Wellwood. This is an incredible adventure of integrating psychology and spirituality, written in a clear and loving voice. Compassion, understanding and wisdom seem to jump out from every page. This book shows how, in both psychotherapy and spiritual work, it is in being awake with thoughts, feelings, and sensations, without separation and distance, that healing can be accomplished.
- "Putting on the Mind of Christ: The Inner Work of Christian Spirituality" by Jim Marion. A former Catholic monk and modern mystic asserts that the path of Christian spirituality, or any spirituality for that matter, is difficult, and that it is individuals, not the Church, who must do the work of preparing themselves for the Kingdom of Heaven. Marion uses his extensive knowledge of scripture to document his assertion that "putting on the mind of Christ," or achieving the same degree of spiritual illumination as the Christ, is the original and true goal of Christianity.
- "Jesus and Buddha: The Parallel Sayings" by Marcus Borg. This lovely little book works beautifully as a meditation aid, or for those searching for the essence of two of the world's great faiths. It is astonishing to discover just how much the two masters had in common, just how universal their truths really are. The sayings (the left page is Jesus and the right page is the parallel saying from Buddha's teachings) stand on their own, unaccompanied or adorned by interpretation or discussion.
Personal Growth
- "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" by Julian Jaynes. Analyzes myth and development of early culture and religon to see where and how a schizm developed in right and left brain thinking. Fourteen years after its original publication this book remains as astounding and controversial as ever. At the heart of this book is the revolutionary idea that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution, but came into being as recently as 3,000 years ago. The implications extend into every aspect if human life.
- "The Right Brain and the Unconscious : Discovering the Stranger Within" by Dr R. Joseph. A most lucid and expansive explanation of how the left-right brain split is at the root of human psychodynamics.
- "The Right Mind: Making Sense of the Hemispheres" (Amazon.com) by Robert Ornstein. Beginning in the 1970s, popular interest in the differences between the human brain's right and left hemispheres led to conflicting ideas, widespread misconceptions, misapplications by educators, and oversimplifications by social reformers. Twenty-five years after his bestselling The Psychology of Consciousness, Robert Ornstein gives new insight into how the brain really works, making sense of the right brain/left brain controversy.
- "Executive EQ: Emotional Intelligence in Leadership and Organization" (Amazon.com) by Robert K. Cooper & Ayman Sawaf. One of the interesting ironies of our time is that we are discovering to what extent our effectiveness depends not just on knowledge and intellect, but also on emotional maturity. This book is a pioneering effort to move our understanding of emotional intelligence to the level of practical application. It provides both valuable insights and practical tools for exploring how individuals and organizations can develop emotional intelligence as a means to enhance success in the workplace.
- "Introduction to Neuro-Linguistic Programming" by Joseph O'Connor & Ian McDermott. Perhaps the most helpful and accessible explanation of NLP principles.
- "Bioenergetics" by Alexander Lowen. Building on the work of Wilhelm Reich, Lowen brilliantly describes the human body-mind and how to unleash our locked-up life energies.
- "A New Guide To Rational Living" by Albert Ellis. A classic book on psychology and self help which demonstrates that many psychological problems are caused by irrational thinking.
- "Reversal Theory - Motivation, Emotion & Personality" (Amazon.com) by Michael J. Apter. Offers a revolutionary new understanding of the motivations that underlie human behaviour.

- "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion" (Amazon.com) by Dr. Robert Cialdini. Explains the six psychological principles that drive our powerful impulse to comply to the pressures of others and shows how we can defend ourselves against manipulation. 'Influence' guarantees readers will never say yes again when they really mean no.
- "Thoughts & Feelings - the Art of Cognitive Stress Intervention" by Mathew McKay, Ph.D. Martha Davis, Ph.D. Patrick Fanning. Chronic anger, anxiety, or depression can result from a group of negative thoughts which exclude other, more beneficial thoughts. This helpful manual presents a series of time-proven techniques for stopping the negative thoughts that profoundly impact many common mood-based problems.
- "I'm OK - You're OK" (Amazon.com) by Thomas A. Harris, MD. One of the most extraordinary self-help bestsellers of all time featuring Transactional Analysis. Harris has helped millions find the freedom to change, liberate their adult effectiveness, and achieve joyful intimacy with others.
Parenting & Life Changes
- "The Relationship Cure" by John Gottman & Joan Declaire. A guide for building better connections with family, friends and lovers. The book's focus is drawn from observations of people speaking with their family, friends, and lovers. From this work, the authors have skillfully located the mechanisms that can be used to improve connection and communication, and provide much practical coaching on what the reader should work on. Anyone who follows the advice in this book will live a life filled with much richer human connections. Think of reading this book as like having an emotional intelligence coach.
- "The Disease to Please: Curing the People-Pleasing Syndrome" by Harriet Braiker. Who are people pleasers? They are the people who say yes, when they want to say no - the perennial nice person whose resentment is concealed behind their public 'happy face'. This is one of the best self-help books and offers an excellent practical program to help anyone (everyone?) who has ever felt the resentment of giving 100% of themselves to others and getting nothing in return.
- "Living Your Best Life" (Amazon.com) by Laura Berman Fortgang. A prominent personal coach describes how we can attain our "best life" at home and at work - one in which we are more flexible, feel more in control, communicate more effectively, and work less hard but more productively. The insights she shares will help you reach the success and fulfillment you are destined for.
- "Pumping Ions: Games and Exercises to Flex Your Mind" (Amazon.com) by Tom Wujec. There are dozens of books filled with brain teasers and exercises designed to improve mental performance. But if you're like me, you've found most of these books to be either needlessly complicated and ridiculously difficult, or too basic and elementary to be of any real use. Pumping Ions strikes a happy medium. It's filled with terrific exercises that are balanced between real mind benders, and just plain fun puzzles and challenges. The book explains many valuable techniques for relaxation, visualization, and learning. And it does so in an insightful, and often humorous way.
- "Mega Brain Power - Transform your life with mind machines and brain nutrients" (Amazon.com) by Michael Hutchison. The thinking person's guide to understanding and using the cutting-edge, inexpensive new technology for tapping into and improving brain power. Human beings normally leave 90% of their brain power unused, but a growing mental fitness movement is changing that with technological mind-expansion leading to new states of consciousness.
- "Creating" (Amazon.com) by Robert Fritz. An inspiring book that analyses the process of creating and the mental barriers that frequently obstruct this, and describes how best to go about achieving new objectives.
Sexuality
- "Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child" by John Gottman & Joan Declaire. Every parent knows the importance of equipping children with the intellectual skills they need to succeed in school and life. But children also need to master their emotions. This is an extremely interesting (and not only for parents but anyone who wants to know more about their childhoods as well) and helpful book about the nature of interaction with our children, the daily exchanges and the big picture, how different parenting styles impact your child's perceptions, behaviors and self esteem from an early age.
- "Life Without Limits" (Amazon.com) by Lucinda Bassett. Lucinda has created the life she wants and always dreamed of having. In the process of doing that, she found the only thing keeping her from being who she wanted to be and having what she wanted to have, was herself. Is that news to anyone? Probably not, but she then moves one step further and provides a very clear, workable and inspirational road map for helping others move forward on this journey.
- "What Color Is Your Parachute?" by Richard Nelson Bolles. A practical manual for job-hunters and career-changers. For 30 years this has been a guiding light for those in pursuit of satisfying and fulfilling employment. This year's edition has been completely revised and rewritten and is designed to work in conjunction with the book's Web site.
- "Life Strategies for Teens" by Jay McGraw. This funny, straightforward guide helps teens steer rather than drift in life, dealing honestly with topics from peer pressure to TV addiction with the underlying mantra, "Don't like it? Change it." It makes a lot of sense, and if a teen took even a few of these lessons to heart, he or she would be more in control than most adults. Great reading for an adult too, to better understand and relate successfully to their child.
- "The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two" (Amazon.com) by Martha Sears R.N. & Dr. William Sears M.D. Attachment parenting is a gentle, reasonable approach to parenting that stresses bonding with your baby, responding to her cues, breastfeeding, 'wearing' your baby, and sharing sleep with your child. For those parents who worry about negative effects of this attention, the Sears say, "Spoiling is what happens when you leave something (or some person) alone on the shelf - it spoils." The book features treatment of illnesses and infant nutritional requirements, and focuses on a baby's five needs: eating, sleeping, development, health, and comfort.
- "Why Marriages Succeed or Fail: And How You Can Make Yours Last" by John Gottman. A lasting relationship results from a couple's ability to resolve conflicts through any of the three styles of problem-solving that are found in healthy marriages: validating, conflict-avoiding, and volatile. Numerous self-quizzes help couples determine the style that best suits them. Gottman points out, however, that couples whose interactions are marked by four characteristics - criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and withdrawal - are in trouble, and he includes self-tests for diagnosing these destructive tactics, as well as steps for countering them.
- "Sex, Ecology, Spirituality: The Spirit of Evolution" by Ken Wilber. One of the great thinkers of our time brings together sex and gender issues, ecological wisdom, and spirituality into a coherent vision for our times. In a tour de force of scholarship and vision, Ken Wilbur traces the course of evolution from matter to life to mind, answering the critical question: Can spiritual concerns be integrated with the modern world?
- "How to Give Her Absolute Pleasure: Totally Explicit Techniques Every Woman Wants Her Man to Know" by Lou Paget. And millions of women are looking for ways to tell men what really turns them on, but don't know how to put their desires into words.
- "How to Be a Great Lover: Girlfriend-To-Girlfriend Totally Explicit Techniques That Will Blow His Mind" (Amazon.com) by Lou Paget. No matter what age we are or how much experience we have, we all want to be great lovers. Most of the sex guides for women, however, have been prudish, esoteric, or incomplete. However, Lou Paget gives you the down and dirty details that you really want to know on exactly what men like and why, and shares the proven erotic techniques that make for incredible sex you'll both enjoy.
- "What He Can't Tell You...and Needs to Say" by Brenda Shoshanna. The common myth is that men don't like to talk. The truth is they don't know how. They've been conditioned to leave the emotions to women. As a result, every father, son, husband, brother, and boyfriend has had something to get off his chest for years. Dr. Shoshanna has persuaded a wide range of men from all walks of life to open up and speak their minds. You will learn techniques for opening up the lines of communication so you won't have to wonder any more.
- "Great American Sex Diet" by Laura Corn. Laura invited thirty-eight couples to test her new recipes: ideas to spice up one's sex life. Most confessed that sex was now infrequent and predictable. They seduced each other. They surprised each other. They courted each other. And the sex they had was more incredible, wonderful, and breathtaking than they'd had in years. Men and women felt better, they listened more, they treated each other with tenderness and respect. In short, they fell in love all over again.
